In our last newsletter we shared our Seed Starting/Potting Mix recipe. We have been asked to share it again. So here it is!
1. Mix thoroughly and hydrate so that it is moist, but not muddy:
- 5 gallons of cow manure and bedding compost finely screened*
- 5 gallons of leaf litter compost finely screened*
- 5 gallons of sphagnum peat moss finely screened*
- 1/4 cup of pulverized limestone
- 1/3 cup Micronized Endomycorrhizal Inoculant (from Bio Organics)
ALTERNATIVE MIXTURE:
- 5 gallons of all-purpose organic compost from manure, plants, leaves, etc. finely screened*
- 5 gallons of sphagnum peat moss finely screened*
- 1/4 cup of pulverized limestone
- 1/4 cup Micronized Endomycorrhizal Inoculant (from Bio Organics)
*Use 1/4″ or 1/3″ hardware cloth to screen compost and peat moss.
2. Insert one set of the Biodynamic Compost Preparations into holes that are evenly spaced in the top of the mix and protrude into the mix half-way down. NOTE: We use one set of compost preparations for up to three cubic yards of potting mix.
3. Store in a cool place, lightly covered to keep moisture in, but also letting it breath. Let rest for at least one week, and ideally one to two months, before using.
4. Note if you are going to use mix for potted plants or planters we recommend that you add an all purpose organic fertilizer as well. Use amount according to the package.
